Commodity is commodity. Art is an attempt to graft (ideally pretty) meaning onto the unknowable. And repeatedly fail at it. Sometimes a piece will resonate. Understanding is not required. Or likely even possible. Words, sounds, sentences, intervals, images, percussion and harmony, pigment and hue are all rudimentary methods of ordering our experience. Or at least minimizing its deranging effects. The earliest humans discovered fermentation just as they stretched drum skins and sketched bison in caves. And for the same reason - fresh perspective. Plus raw meat. Spiritual enlightenment is as speculative as pharmacology, but an image, a burst of color or crisply rendered line, is unassailable no matter what you pray to.
