Storming Kabul was founded in the late 80’s, armed only with a two-stringed bass, a Les Paul, and a Fostex four-track recorder. Ace Storming and Danny Kabul played gigs in and around the San Francisco art scene, burning up the stage at clubs like the Crystal Pistol, the Hunter, and the Blue Lamp. After working through a succession of drummers, we became Waking Snakes, helmed now by Ace Waking and Danny “Tube” Snakes, developing a more honkey-tonk/Americana sound, and drove a Ford Econoline van across the high prairie and deep Midwest as part of the Bargain Karma tour of the early 90’s, an offshoot of Lollapalooza founded by Arthur Russell. Waking Snakes’ biggest hit, "Don't You Dare Call Me Ishmael" briefly rose to number
ninety-nine on the Big Prog 100 charts in the summer of '94, before being sampled by MC Drac Teef for his trip-hop classic, "What What Whassis?" From the ashes of that tour, Perv Idols rose to a brief thunderously en fuego prominence. We reclaimed our names as a studio twosome a-la Steely Dan for our debut (and only) record “Joseph and the Primarily Monochrome Dreamcoat.” |
Decades later, that iconic record still makes the scene in car stereos, dance clubs, and nerdy cult scenes around the world. As of this moment, rumors of a reunion tour appear unfounded.
