1972 The Temprees “Lovemen” on We Produce Records

For my money the best release from the trio, who put a stamp on a variant of pure soul harmony. We Produce was a subsidiary of Stax, which is slightly odd since the Temprees have a very different sound, rely more on the gorgeously delicate, intertwining vocals than uptempo Memphis groove. It kind of sounds like a mix of The Sylvers and The Delfonics, with a dash of Ernie Hines and some Shaolin tossed in. They are backed on various tracks by either The Bar-Kays (most of whom were killed in the Otis Redding plane crash), The Movement (Isaac Hayes), and The Memphis Horns. How big could that studio have been? Hey, on a second date and think you might end up back at your place? Forget Barry White and toss this on, your soon-to-be life partner will instantly recognize your refusal to be obvious and grasp of nuance. Super-slick action. Oh oh oh yeah.
