1974 Antique Sorcery “Antique Sorcery” on Funny.

Well, if you saw my post of “Sincerely Antique” last week, you know this band is actually The Antiques/Los Antiques, who decided it would be a hilarious idea to slightly change their name for each release. Which, yes, I give all credit to the balls and subversive cleverness of, it would have made me laugh too, but was a curse for their careers since although they were THE hottest band in Miami through the 70s, they never really got out of Sonny Crockett’s vice to break nationally.

Hey, remember before the internet? I do. Try to imagine piecing together who the fuck this band was without reaching into your pocket for a computer/phone eight-thousand times more powerful than HAL 9000 and giving it a quick Goog. Man, even store clerks had no clue back then, and you had to piece the mystery together through random liners, the odd article, whispers from other vinyl heads (who half the time were wrong, or just stoned), and pure guesswork.

It was both a huge pain, and in many ways WAY better than now. In any case, “Sorcery” RULES. Man, I love this record. Banging salsito-funk, psych-Guaguancó, garage-latin, Son Son, slick Bolero, heavy boogaloo, a taste of cu-bop, a dash of Descarga, and the MIGHTY guitar of Chebi Rodriguez. Oh yeah, it smokes. And seriously, the poster? Haha, I should have it framed and hang it over the bed in the Honeymoon Suite here at Castle Wax. Done!
