1974 promo Osmar Milito “Na Trilha De Osmar Milito (Temas De Sucesso Em Novelas)” on Soma

I would say it’s virtually impossible to improve on the great pianist Milito’s first two records, and that does more or less hold true with this, his third, but that doesn’t mean it’s not excellent in its own right. One clear reason for the downshift in style and sound is that this record is mostly Milito playing with Quarteto Forma, and it is more or less Rio Library Music made for various Telenovelas, or Portuguese soap operas. Our boy Osmar, not a fan of harmonic monogamy, also does a track with the groove band Trama, one with Luna E Suza, and one with Quarteto Number One, although good luck, aside from a few rando 45s, learning anything about those outfits and who played on them. There’s a bunch of lovely jazzy samba-bossa swinging and cinema-cut instrumental meanders, and the record is in a way a lot of fun for what it doesn’t sound like, a true crossing ball from the left pitch. It’s sexy, saturated in color, mannered, dramatic, weird, killer. Oh yea.
