1974 The Ensemble Al-Salaam “The Sojourner” on Strata East

Pure strata all the way, a wonderful out-spiritual, empowerment-consciousness modal drive led by the mighty Khaliq Abdul Al Rouf (“Elephant Trot Dance”, an all-timer, backed by the Ensemble), who handles alto, soprano, tenor, piccolo, and flute. Really great impressionistic bass playing from Leroy Seals, and interestingly “Spiritual Assistance” from bassist Bill “Spike’s Dad” Lee. Features beautiful and expressive vocals from Beatrice Parker, whose voice, style and attitude will immediately send you right to the summer of 1973. Burns, grooves, lulls, sways. Ultra hip and righteous. At times barely-funk and almost-Coltrane. Definitely a masterpiece of the form.
