1977 Bobby Jackson “The Bobby Jackson’s Cafe Extra-Ordinaire Story” on Ninth Note Records.

Well, since posting the newly-acquired OG of “Desiree Song” yesterday, re-posting what I said about its companion a while back:

“Only 1000 pressed and apparently sold on site. Absolutely killer almost-proggy soul jazz straight out of the hard streets of Minneapolis. Bassist/club owner Jackson slams his way through a variety of local lineups from his slick house band, including the mighty Bobby Lyle (“The Genie”) on piano, and while the Cafe Extra was hardly the Village Vanguard, it was a hopping spot that many big names dropped in to play, like McCoy Tyner Trio, Pharoah Sanders Quintet, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones Trio, Roland Kirk, and THE MAN Joe Henderson. Word is some serious underworld action also transpired behind the scenes, and the joint had a notorious rep. I managed to track down a picture and, no joke, it does look like an excellent place to get stabbed. And just the sort of spot I no doubt would have been a regular if things broke differently age-and-geography-wise, my Wild Turkey neat already sweating on the bar napkin before I took my seat. Either way, the sign on the door said the purpose of the Cafe was, “To create more respect for the jazz musician and to create an atmosphere favorable to increased public acceptance of true jazz as a great American art form.” BTW, have I mentioned how absurdly great this record is? It effing smokes! Essential.”

Yeah, I do like this better than DS, even a lot better, but to me they’re really a 2xLP and are essential mirrors of one another. I love that they don’t sound exactly alike, or have the same attitude or intent. Finally, they are, in original incarnation, shelved side by side, as they should have been in 1991. I bet it’s been WAY too long since you’ve spun “Fluck Flick”….Nuff said.1977 Bobby Jackson “The Bobby Jackson’s Cafe Extra-Ordinaire Story” on Ninth Note Records.
