The top series is from black and white 100-foot spools of hand-developed Tri-X, individual prints made in a darkroom. Some are tinted or hand-colored. Portraits involve color film and/or film of projected slides. The silkscreens were hand-printed during the First Gulf War and wheat papered around every available surface in certain West Coast cities, an act which I continue to deny any involvement in, or even countenance under the guise of Free Speech or Protest Art, neither of which should probably be capitalized. I initially envisioned the final series as just a fun project with my daughter--every morning before school for months we took a snapshot of her holding an iconic piece of jazz vinyl. At first this was very exciting, as she suggested various locations and poses, not to mention the choice of album art, but as time went on her inevitable boredom grew, the pictures themselves paradoxically becoming more interesting and compositionally sound in lockstep with the growing impatience.
It was in both the best and worst moments that I realized we were making art. |
